The Phoenix International Raceway is a one mile tri-oval race track located in Avondale, Arizona. It opened in 1964 as the new home of major open-wheel racing in the Phoenix area, and in 1988 it hosted its first NASCAR NEXTEL Cup event.
Today, Phoenix International Raceway has a tradition that is unmatched in the world of racing. The Indycars have made 58 visits to PIR, and the annual Fall NASCAR weekend -- including NASCAR NEXTEL Cup, Busch, Craftsman Trucks and Featherlite Southwest Series races -- is one of the biggest events in the entire state. As a matter of fact, the Checker Auto Parts 500 NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series race is arguably the largest one-day sporting event in Arizona.
In 2004, Phoenix International Raceway unveiled a state-of-the art night lighting system that is showcased every spring when the NASCAR stars make their first of two visits to the Phoenix Internetional Raceway.
Another notable feature of Phoenix International Raceway is the presence of the "Hillside", a fan favorite viewing area located on Monument Hill located just outside of turn four. Race fans can purchase general admission access to the hillside where they can bring oversized and hard coolers, lawn chairs, and canopies and enjoy the race from a unique vantage point.
Camping is a great way to enhance your weekend at Phoenix International Raceway. You can catch all the great racing by day (or night) and also take in the beauty of the majestic Estrella Mountains.
